Trocaire Lenten Campaign 2015

On this weeks programme John is joined by Fintan from Trocaire and Fr Derek Leonard of Limerick diocese to speak about Trocaire's 2015 Lenten campaign.

This year, Trócaire’s Lenten campaign highlights how communities in developing countries are struggling to survive in the face of extreme changes in their weather systems. Climate change is now a leading cause of poverty in many of the communities where Trócaire works. Hundreds of millions of  people rely on agriculture for their daily survival.  But unreliable rainfall, storms and floods are making it increasingly difficult to grow crops.

With your support and solidarity, Trócaire is working with affected communities to adapt and cope with the unpredictability of the changing climate. This includes finding alternative water supplies, diversifying crops, sustainable land management and being prepared for extreme weather events when they happen.

Last November Fr Derek Leonard visited Ethiopia to learn about this years Lenten campaign. Here he speaks about those he met and places he visited.

Last year, Trócaire supported such programmes in 15 countries, benefiting some 656,000 people directly and nearly 1.5 million people indirectly.Working together with our supporters, our partners and our beneficiaries we hope to do even more to address the injustice of climate change.

Gospel - John 3: 14-21

And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.
