Taizé in Rome: 40,000 young people for the 35th European Meeting

From 28 December 2012 to 2 January 2013, the city of Rome will host the 35th European meeting of young people. Forty thousand young adults from across the European continent and beyond will gather in the Italian capital for six days of prayer, reflection and life with parishes, families and religious communities in and around Rome.

Prayer services will be held every day at 2 pm and 7:30 pm in seven large churches of the city, including the major basilicas: St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Meals will be distributed at the Circus Maximus; the afternoon workshops will include visits to the catacombs and other significant places of faith. On Saturday 29 December at 6 pm, Taizé songs will resonate in St. Peter’s Basilica during a prayer with Pope Benedict XVI.

While being well integrated into the life of the city of Rome, the European meeting will take place along the lines of “pilgrimage of trust” led by Taizé: morning program in parishes with moments of prayer and sharing and the discovery of signs of hope in the neighborhoods; afternoon workshops on spiritual, artistic and social topics; prayer for peace in the parishes followed by a “festival of peoples” to usher in the new year.

You can read more about the Pilgrimage of Trust European Meeting in Rome HERE on the Taize website. For more information, you can check the following pages on the website:

On a more local level, we understand that due to the costs involved, Limerick Diocese is not taking a group of young people to the World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janerio as the cost is extremely prohibitive. So the diocese is organising a pilgrimage to Taize from July 4th to July 9th 2013.This extraordinary community in France should offer young people another perspective on faith, prayer and on community. The trip is for those aged 18- 25 (Participants must be 18 on or before 3 July 2013) only and they hope to take about 35-40 young people. You can download the booking form and information leaflet by clicking the link.
